Ryan completed his doctorate in counseling psychology at the University of Miami. He has worked at the University of Utah Counseling Center, the University of Miami Counseling Center and Athletic Department, and a community clinic in South Florida.
Ryan has published and presented scholarly work related to whiteness and racial socialization, racialized aspects of mental health, and efforts toward social change. He has also facilitated multiple intergroup dialogue courses concerning race, ethnicity, SES, and religious traditions. Prior to his doctoral work, Ryan graduated from the Community Development and Action master’s program at Vanderbilt University. While at Vanderbilt, he worked with a community organizing initiative attempting to increase access to affordable housing in a rapidly gentrifying city. These experiences inform the lens Ryan takes in his therapeutic work. Ryan believes that contextual, systemic factors inform clients’ concerns, and he practices Acceptance and Commitment Therapy situated within Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological model. Ryan’s clinical interests include identity development and related issues (e.g., concerns with race, sexuality, gender, religion), neurodivergence, family of origin issues, and adjustment to college. Ryan enjoys both individual therapy and more community-oriented mental health efforts such as outreach and group therapy.
